Why You Need Water Pumps for Your Ponds

Tagged Under : , , ,

You’ve recently installed a pond to enhance the look of your garden. Perhaps you wanted the soothing sound to give you a place to relax. Maybe there are even fish or other aquatic life in your pond. You may not know this but you need water pumps if you have a pond. They are vital to create and keep the harmonious balance that existed when you first created and installed the pond.  Water pumps are important for oxygenation, circulation and for controlling pests.

It airs out the water and brings oxygen back into the pond itself. This also helps to rid the smell of stagnant water. Circulation allows plants and good insects to flourish in your pond.

Speaking of insects, the last thing you want is mosquitoes hanging around your serene pond area. No one can enjoy the pond if they are being attacked by mosquitoes. Because they breed in stagnant water using water pumps along with a faux waterfall or fountain will deter them. While mosquitoes aren’t the only irritating insect for ponds, they are the most prominent. They are also a health hazard. While the idea normally just brings about the idea of being itchy, red and a little painful, that is not the case for everyone. They can pass infections and diseases such as West Nile Virus and malaria for humans, western equine encephalomyelitis for horses and heartworm disease for dogs.

You will have a plethora of hummingbirds, frogs, butterflies, birds and more heading out to your pond. If the water is allowed to remain stagnant then you will have more unwanted insects or animal guests.

Another great reason for water pumps is to help control the algae levels. You do want a bit of algae to keep things in balance but stagnant water can get overwhelming. A bit like swimming pool water that is allowed to sit all winter without a cover. Nasty green stuff you don’t want for your pond. It sucks the oxygen out of the water and begins to kill fish and the plant life that are living in your pond. So adding a pump can actually keep the entire natural balance of your pond in tact. That may sound a bit weird using a man-made device to keep the natural balance but in a contained area it’s what you need. It is a bit like the pump on a fish tank.

If you have a fountain or waterfall in your pond then water pumps are required. They are used to recycle the water by moving it from the pond back up to the top of the waterfall or fountain. This means better water circulation and not running up your water bill.
